Wanna sew a chicken? |
I mean, I love chicken in its various forms. (A chicken dinner is almost
always a winner in my book... heh, heh.) But I've honestly never given much
thought to incorporating them into my sewing. Imagine my surprise when I set
out to find some chicken-themed sewing projects and had no trouble finding
many.
Perhaps I shouldn't be all that surprised, since sewing has long been a big
part of rural farm life and chickens are bound to inspire in those quarters. Mostly, though, they tend to
make their appearance in the form of appliques on quilts. The six projects that I've collected for this post are representative of the other ideas out there.
Oh, and what motivated me to do this little roundup of chicken
projects? I came across a really clever one recently (number three below) and
it reminded me of a couple of others that I had encountered over the years. Thus, I
thought it would be fun to make a list and share them.
These are all found on YouTube, by the way.
1. Patchwork Stuffed Chicken
Sounds good enough to eat, right? Well, not really, because this particular
stuffed chicken is one of Lisa Pay's creations that you'll want to
make out of some of your favourite fabrics and then proudly display when
you're done. She says it's even suitable for a beginner.

I love Lisa's designs and would make them all if I had the patience and the
right fabrics to make them shine. To see some of her other work, check out

Oh, and guess what? Yep — she also has a chicken pin cushion!
2. Chicken Basket
I've been a fan of Ulyana's
Estadistica Datos del Mundo YouTube channel for at least a few
years now. (Certainly long enough to have memorized the lengthy and
intriguing name in Spanish!) She's mainly focused on sewing, but her range
of videos is extensive and varied.
This one — called Chicken Basket — was uploaded February 10, 2022. It
would be a conversation starter in any kitchen or dining area as a bread
basket or container for condiments. (By the way, chicken baskets are
surprisingly popular sewing projects; I came across several.)

3. Chicken Pot Holder
Here it is — the thing that made me put together this list of
chicken-themed sewing projects. This was simply the most clever thing that
I'd seen in quite some time. Who would have thought of making a pot holder
in the shape of a chicken? Really!
And to have it be so functional is just icing on the cake. Check out this
"I might just have to make" project by looking up
Estadistica Datos del Mundo once more. It's called
Chicken Pot Holder and was uploaded June 18, 2023.

Ulyana is an example of someone who has done really well on YouTube in a
fairly short time. She only joined in February 2020 and has over 970K
subscribers as of this writing. She's also branched off and started up
other channels as well, including one on cooking.
4. Chicken Tablet/Phone Stand
One of my more recent YouTube discoveries is a channel called
Retales de Mil Colores, hosted by Almudena. (These two ladies are really testing my
retention of Spanish names and spelling!)
This particular rendition of a digital tablet or mobile/cell phone stand was
uploaded February 15, 2022 (called the
Stand for Mobile Phone or Tablet). I've see at least two other
versions of these on YouTube.

This design is based on the fact that a 3D triangular form translates well into a chicken, as you'll see in the next project.
5. Chicken Pattern Weights
A long time ago, I thought I needed to make myself some pattern weights.
(I featured some in a post about
sewing tools that you can make.) As it turned out, I've managed to sew for ten-plus years without the
assistance of weights and it's likely due to my not having to sew much
clothing. (The bigger your pattern pieces, the more you might want some
way to hold them in place apart from pins.)

6. Chicken Purse/Pouch
I'm including this one because it's a chicken-themed sewing project and
therefore, meets the criteria for my list. It is not, however, something
that I would ever care to make, nor want to carry. But that's just me.
It was uploaded to the Chuanshui Fabrics channel on September
6, 2020 and is called DIY How To Make Chicken Shaped Purse.

Curiously enough, even though this is made out of fabrics, the idea of a chicken purse triggered a memory of a particularly unusual one by Debra Gavant in this post from 2016.
To search for any of these on YouTube, type in the name of the project, the
channel and the date of the video (all of which I'll always give you) and
you should find them, no problem.

DeleteThis is so funny because I am currently working on a chicken project! I kid you not. I'm making 12 chicken ornaments for my adult daughter's birthday gift. Small ornaments, a little smaller than the palm of my hand, all different fabrics. They are coming along cute and I still have to stuff them. She had hopes of raising chickens but it's not allowed where she lives, so I think she will get a kick out of chicken ornaments. I think that chicken basket is cute too.

Oh I love chickens. We did have some for a while but won't be getting any more for various reasons, so I like to make chickens. Definitely will think about a couple of these. Thanks for your constant inspiration.
