I was at a drug store checkout a few days later when I saw a display of "Kleenex Wallets". They were just foldover plastic thingies filled with tissues, but it occurred to me that I could make a double-sided holder that could be filled with tissues on one side and wet wipes on the other.

This easy to make project — which takes full advantage of the unique properties of waxcloth — might be the answer for me to carry wet wipes around full-time. This stylish little wallet took all of two hours to whip up... and I was going slowly and taking numerous pictures and making last minute adjustments to the measurements the whole time.
Waxcloth — or, for that matter, laminated cotton — doesn't fray at the edges. That is a great property, giving me the idea to bind the edges of the wallet with it, rather than do a traditional hidden seam by turning stuff inside out.

Another benefit of something that doesn't fray is that using it for binding reduces the number of steps from the normal sew, wrap and sew again. Regular binding is folded three times in order to hide the raw edges. Binding made out of waxcloth only needs to be folded once, which makes working with it super easy since you can wrap and clip and make sure everything is perfect before you start sewing. And you only need to sew once!

Now, I don't know how "wet" the wet wipes will stay inside here for any extended period of time; that might depend on weather conditions. (Actually, around here at this time of the year, they may freeze... although this week we are actually having a bit of a warm spell.) So it goes without saying that your mileage will vary regarding how something like this works for you. But I have no doubt that it does the job if you actually use wet wipes on a regular basis. (And the thing is, you can safely "re-wet" them in the wallet without worrying about getting anything else wet.)
If you're hesitant to try out this material, let me give you some reassurance. This was my first attempt at making anything with waxcloth/laminated cotton and I found it to be a pleasant experience. (Other than the need to stay focused and be careful about sewing straight!) I am now eager to create other things that I had previously thought about making but never pursued due to the need for this precise type of fabric.

It looks like a brilliant idea Rochelle. I had made oodles of tissue holder and use them, but I haven't used wet wipes since I had young children. This duo would come in handy for camping trips and especially for young mothers. I still have never used wax cloth or laminated fabrics either. I guess I never had a use for them. I have seen a lot of snack bags online using wax cloth, so that would be something I might try too one day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Daryl. Just as a word of caution... apparently we need to ensure that any such fabric is "food safe" if used for carrying/holding snacks. (That old "plastic" dilemma.) In any case, it's interesting how two weeks ago I would never have thought that I'd be working with these fabrics, either!
DeleteI'm wondering if one could cover/rub wax into the zipper to help it be more waterproof?? I love this idea; I use "baby/adult wipes" every day in the car. TIA Karen
ReplyDeleteThat's a good thought, as long as you are careful not to gunk up the zipper teeth, I suppose! I have no experience with using wax that way but it sounds like it's worth a try. Thanks for stopping by.
