"Be Kind & Polite" Table Topper & Wall Hanging

Kind & Polite Table Topper by eSheep Designs
My new table topper...
After revamping my Kind & Polite fabric design in the spring, I waited and waited and waited for Spoonflower's summer fat quarter sale. It's a two for one promotion that has occured in early July for the past few years, one that I usually take advantage of.

I was starting to think that there wouldn't be a sale at all when the last full week of July came and went. But that following Monday morning, there it was: 50% off fat quarters. I bought several, including three reworked Kind and Polite designs.

As you can see in the close-up here, I added some stitching lines.

The whole design was also put into an oval shaped background and resized to fit on two different fat quarter widths: one 21" wide for basic cotton and one 27" wide for minky, fleece, or any of the other wider fabrics.

The idea is that by purchasing a single fat quarter, one can make a table topper, or a wall hanging, or a mini baby blanket.

For the minky or fleece option, there is no need to have a backing, but for a (cotton) table topper, I created a text only design to use as the backing.

Here is mine. The 21" wide version is slightly different in that the faux quilting lines are not present on the white oval part of the background.

The other side looks like this. You can see clearly here that I quilted along the circle.

Table topper back...

I've had a table topper on our glass dining table for a couple of years now, having sewn up this one after making the matching CD coaster/mug rugs. Instead of quilt batting, I used another remnant from the blanket that was used to pad my tablet envelope.

My usual table topper...

I've never posted about it since it was such as simple project. (And putting it together seemed very similar to how my ironing mat was made.) But unlike many of my sewing projects, it's proven itself useful every day since it came into being.

With the 27" wide minky version, I used the extra fabric afforded by Spoonflower's white border to make a casing for a wooden dowel.

Use the excess border at the top to create a channel and trim away the rest...

I zig-zagged the other three raw edges of the piece. The unfinished minky doesn't really unravel, but has a habit of shedding tiny little bits that was an annoyance. The zig-zagging resolves that issue.

Here it is as a wall hanging.

My first attempt at the wall hanging...

I'm thinking about adding tassels or something to the corners to straighten them out/weigh them down. Or for a mini blanket or as a decorative rug, I might try binding the edges. Everything is still a work in progress. I'll see what comes to be; a couple of these are destined as Christmas presents and I still have time to decide what to do with them.

If you want to spread the word of kindness and politeness to any of your friends and family, you can get these fabrics in my Spoonflower shop, featured in the Inspiration collection. Regular price for a fat quarter in Petal Signature Cotton is $10.50 USD; in fleece or minky is $14.00. Of course, you can always wait until the next sale on fat quarters, which should be in November.
