New Pattern Release: Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag!

Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag by eSheep Designs
Introducing the Hot Hues Convertible
Crossbody Fooler Bag Pattern!
It's been a long time in the making but today is finally the day for the unveiling of my Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag pattern and tutorial! (Just in time for summer!)

This is a 46-page PDF that provides clear instructions with over 80 photos to guide you in making your very own versatile, trendy, go anywhere crossbody bag. You've seen the results of my testers' bags last week, now it's time to make your own!

How Big is This Bag?

Your completed bag will be about 9” high by 7” wide (23cm x 18cm) at the top. Width at the bottom will be somewhere between 9” to 10” (23-25cm) depending on how you finish off the corners. (Strap length is totally up to you.)

Who is this Project For?

While I would classify this as a beginner level project, it is written for someone who has successfully completed a couple of simple sewing projects in the past (ideally, something like a zippered pouch or wristlet). It would be preferable if you were not intimidated by the idea of zippers and buttonholes, even if you have not had previous experience with them. (That said, I like to create patterns that enable the user to customize, so you can definitely make a variation of this bag using simpler techniques if you are so inclined.) As for the sewing part of this project, it is all just straight line sewing; there are no curves to worry about. And as an additional FYI, a couple of my pattern testers were absolute beginners who had no issues.

How Long will this Project Take?

This project can be completed in a day once you have all of your supplies at the ready... definitely doable over a leisurely weekend!

What do I Need to Make this Project?

Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag by eSheep Designs
Why is it called "Hot Hues"? That's why!
The key concept behind the Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag is the idea of using fabrics creatively to make a bag that will serve you for many years, transitioning from one hot colour trend to the next.

So you'll need a bunch of cool fabric, but not a lot of any one kind, which means this project is a great way to use up small pieces from your stash. (And not that you would do this, but to give you an idea of the total requirements, one fat quarter will accommodate the flap and both body panels. Another will take care of the pocket linings. And a third will make your fabric strap if that's the kind of strap you want.) At the very least, you will want two contrasting/coordinating fabrics: one for the body and one for the flap.

List of requirements:
  • Several coordinating/contrasting fabrics (3 fat quarters in total should suffice; total fabric usage depends on whether you make fabric straps)
  • Up to 1/3 yd/m of Decor Bond or Pellon SF101
  • 18' x 10" (46cm x 26cm) piece of Pellon 987F (fusible fleece)
  • Two 3/4" (2cm) D-rings (if using a pre-made chain strap that comes with swivel hooks; optional)
  • 3/4" (2cm) wide belt or webbing cut to desired length (optional)
  • Two 7" (18cm) or longer matching/contrasting zippers
  • Pins, clips, ruler, fading marker, your sewing machine's zipper foot & buttonholer, iron, pressing cloth, etc.
  • One to four contrasting buttons, up to 1" (2.5cm) in diameter
  • Matching/contrasting thread
  • Two 3/4" (2cm) swivel snap hooks (if using a chain for a strap; optional)

  2. Would it be possible to alter this pattern to also have a zippered top closure under say a mock flap to still give the bag a jazzy look. thanks

    1. The short answer is that you could, by adding an actual lining and making up the top of the bag like you would a zippered pouch. However, the strap tabs take up a bit of space up there, so you'd have to consider how to reposition those or just live with an opening that's somewhat narrow.
